Today is another sunny and bright blue sky day. Shaunti is begging us to go play Frisbee with her but if we do it too early, she just begs later in the day so we are getting smart now and putting her off until later in the afternoon. Of course, it would be good for all of us to get outside in the fresh air and get moving. But, if I did the Frisbee thing I wouldn't be able to listen to my audible books and crochet on my projects. Such a dilemma! Which fun thing do I do next? So much to do and so little time. I swear that in retirement I have less available time than when I was working. I'm not complaining but just stating a fact. Maybe I'll get inspired to take on a Tunisian crochet project or make another knitted shrug or start knitting socks. Hmmm. Not today. Today I'm going to 'read' and crochet. Check out Shaunti with her Frisbee return. She is now bringing it right back to me. I hated to have to chase her down in order to throw it. I have to admit though that it was poodlepapa who taught her to bring it back. Something about his more commanding voice.

New Year 2012 and New Wrap

The New Year is here. It has been a very warm December but has now cooled down to a more normal temperature. Today it is mid-30's with a high near 50. The sun is shining and Shaunti insists on going out to chase the Frisbee. B-r-r-r-r-r! So, we bundle up and go with her. She has finally learned to bring it back and drop it...at least we don't have to chase it. In between these forays into the 'wilderness' I continue to crochet. Finished my first afghan in 2012 for the HAP project. It is the 37th I have put together. I just finished a throw for a friend and a shawl/wrap to have in reserve just in case I need a gift. Both were made using Lion Brand's Pound of Love with a trim using Vanna White's Barley. Very nice yarn.

Friends remembered me when on travel and brought me a poodle security welcome mat they saw in Kansas City. Of course, my poodle had to check it out to be sure it 'worked.' Guess it is working, we've had no strange poodles in our house. Shaunti is the official guard poodle in our house.

Red Heart's Key Hole Scarf

I've been busy the past two weeks finishing up projects for a charity event and making new items for friends and other organizations. Sure keeps me hopping but happy. The above scarf is for the daughter of a friend. Can't send it though until I finish a second scarf in navy blue for the youngest daughter of the same friend. I'm hoping this red scarf isn't too long for the 8 year old. Red is her color! Anyway, we shall see. And, in the meantime I must make a shawl for another friend and then ..... and then .... well you get the picture. Isn't it wonderful to have such a wonderful hobby that makes me happy and is so useful to others. I will never be bored. I just ordered some audible books of The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon and am listening to these epic novels based in Scotland and some in Colonial America, and back and forth. I just crochet away and drift with the characters as they go about their lives. If you haven't read any of these books, I recommend them. They are the best! BEAUTIFUL FALL DAY

Well, I've been in a computing mood lately. After going to National Theatre and seeing 'Jersey Boys' I had to have some clips so I could continue to enjoy the songs and singers. We so enjoyed the play. Oh What a Night! And this was in 2011 not 1963! It was a great play. I recommend it to anyone who has not seen it. In between downloading some clips and playing the songs, I finished two more projects for my charity work. Sometimes things just go together fast and these two did. Today I even cleaned out the yarn closet to see what is there and what needed to be rearranged so I can find it. Threw out a big box that originally had yarn in it but was now just storing miscellaneous skeins. Now I have everything in its place in plastic see-through bags. Much easier to pick and choose that way. Let's see if I reduce my stash significantly between now and December 31st. The problem is much of what is left is lace weight and this takes a long time to crochet into a shawl. So, now for the finished two items.

First is the scarf out of Lion Brand's Jiffy yarn that matches the beret. The pattern called for a cowl but I turned it into a keyhole scarf and added a shell edging. The second hat just finished today was with Red Heart Zoomy yarn which has been discontinued but was perfect for this slouchy beret designed by Ellen Gormley. Both are in the bag to go to the charity fairs scheduled for the end of November.

Another Spring Like Day in November

Hard to believe that today is November 14th. It is 70 degrees and sunny. The leaves crunch under foot and it just doesn't feel like mid November. Enjoy it while it's here...it could snow a foot tomorrow. Yes, it's been that kind of weather, changeable. But, I have been steady in my crocheting and in knitting on my cousin's shrug. I have completed a 2nd skein of yarn and another 4 inches of shrug....only 30 inches to go now. I'll get it done soon. I can only knit for so long before I wear out so in between time I made this lovely hat for the HAP group. Check out their activities at their site. Soon I'll have a cowl to go with the hat. Both were made from Lion Brand yarns. The orange is Jiffy's Rust and the other is Tweed's Woodlands. The V-Stitch Beret and Cowl pattern was designed by Mara Callahan. So, gotta go finish the cowl. The model is unnamed at this time but she is happy to just be sitting wherever I place her. Life is Good!!!

Mobius Shrug in Tweed

Today was a cold and blustery day. It is now dark and only 5:30 p.m. The loss of daylight savings time is always a transition. More time to crochet! Today I finished a shrug that I had started sometime ago. The yarn is Tweed by Lion Brand and the Sequoia Shrug is the pattern I started out making. It is a simple rectangle so when I determined that I didn't have enough yarn to finish it, it was easy to just twist one end, sew it together and then finish it using the same stitch as in the shrug pattern. I added the shells and picots to make the edging pop out. Of course, I had to devise something to cover up the seam so I made a strip of shells and picots and sewed it over the seam. The yarn is stretchy and worked great for a mobius. If you decide to try it, the pattern is free. I recommend you get 4 skeins of yarn for the mobius. If you decide to make the shrug, you'll need 5 skeins.

Today seemed like an appropriate time to update my blog with a new look and a recently completed project. I have been remiss about keeping current on here but hopefully you will excuse me. I have been visiting family in Tulsa after over 18 years and it was great fun to see everyone after such a long time. In my rental car I was happy to be able to get around just like always...as long as I stayed off the bypasses and took the numbered and named streets. Everything was 10 minutes away from where I stayed even the Hard Rock Casino/Hotel where we went for dinner one night. This was a new adventure since there were no casinos when I lived in Tulsa. We played the slots and the video poker. My cousin said she won which is good because I didn't. I'm not a big gambler so I didn't lose much...$60. But, just think of the yarn I could have bought? Oh well, my closet is still full so maybe there will be more room for new yarn later. In the meantime I'm making inroads in the stash and am slowly but surely using up my older yarn. Only buying new for special projects. I know, I know no new yarn but for some projects my old yarn just won't do. Excuses! Excuses! Here's the latest Circle-Edged Wrap by Kim Guzman. New Charity Projects for Washington Hospital Center's Cancer Center

The weather is finally cooler and sunnier. We had lots of rain earlier which made it easy to stay in and crochet. I've been working on using up my stash yarn and have managed to make up several projects to donate to charity. specifically, I'll be donating the lapghan and the shawl shown below to the Washington Hospital Center's Cancer Center.

Both items turned out quite nice so I will be mailing them next week to Lorna at the Cancer Support Services. I love to crochet and it is so nice to be able to share the warmth with others.

Also made a bulky best for a small woman or large girl using a heavy chocolate colored N.Y. Yarn's Grande. The pattern was furnished by Patternworks which sold the yarn. It made up in just a few hours but putting the buttons on took some thought. I don't expect it will ever be buttoned since it is so heavy but the buttons add a nice detail.

It seems that fall is right around the corner. Today it is cooler and the sun is peeking in and out. Forecast is to have cooler and dryer weather after today with highs in the 70's but much less humidity. That will be nice. For me it doesn't matter much since I crochet in a climate controlled house. As long as my yarn lasts, I will be happily crocheting while the weather does whatever it pleases. Just finished another Snuggle Bug, a design by Sue Childress, which is just wonderful because it makes up so fast and is so cute. When a hat is added, it makes a very attractive ensemble for some lucky baby. Here is the one I just finished for a very good friend's grandniece using Red Heart. The hat was made using a free pattern from Caron Yarn. The model is a rabbit I keep for just these kind of patterns. My poodle won't sit still as a model.

FUN FUR PROJECT FOR CHARITY

What fun I'm having making all these things for a craft show later this year. I discovered that the Lion Brand's Fun Fur is fun to work with as long as you use large hooks and a soft 2nd or 3rd strand of yarn. I just made a hat and a scarf using Lion Brand's Tweed in Marble and Fun Fur in Lava. It was fast and looks like it will be something that will sell. I'm thinking of getting some more fur to go with my Homespun. Wouldn't candy apple red and red fur be a pretty combination? I have lots of the candy apple red Homespun. Just never sure what I would do with it...now I may have a project. Today it is raining! Pouring! We don't need more rain but guess the rain gods aren't listening. Anyway, it's a good day to sort out some yarn projects, take some pictures, and post my results on my Ravelry Page. Here are the recent project pictures. Is Fall Far Off?

Today is a glorious day. Sunny and 80 degrees. I should be out doing something but that would mean spending money. I can do that right here at the computer and probably faster. So, I'm inside while my husband is outside working in the yard. He loves it (I hope) because he has to spend a lot of time on it. We have a big yard. I am beginning on some new projects for charity. All of my organizations say shawls, hats, throws, and more shawls are what sell. I love making these items and it is a great way to use up some of my yarn that is hanging around way too long. Let's see, if I use up some yarn then I can replace it with new yarn, isn't that right? Forget that I've been emptying my yarn closet since I started this blog in 2007 and so far I can barely shut the door. So, if I'm going to use it up I'd better get to hooking hadn't I. So, I'll be off but first here is the latest hat and scarf I've finished using Lion Brand's Hometown USA super-bulky yarn. It works up fast and is machine washable/dryable. Great for kids and grownups alike. Well, as you can see, the hat is for a small child but the scarf is for anyone. The next hat will be made bigger. Who knew that this pattern with this yarn would make a 16 inch hat. Even the dummy can't get it over her head!

2012 Special Olympic Scarves

Well, I finished 5 of the Special Olympics pattern for Maryland. I'll be shipping off to the coordinator but not for another few months in case I make some additional scarves. Just saw where I can use any pattern as long as the red and blue theme is followed. I think I'll make a few more using a different pattern but keeping the 6x60 inch size. It's for a good cause. September is Here and Cooler Weather

September is here with cooler weather but still lots of humidity. We survived Hurricane Irene with no significant damage, just lots of rain and moderately strong winds. It was strong enough to blow down some leaves and leafy limbs that covered the yard but caused no damage. Guess we were fortunate when the next day we heard about all the power outages. And even today, some homes and businesses are still without power. The kids got to miss the beginning of school in many locations nearby. And, of course, there was lots of damage on up the coast in New Jersey and Vermont. It is amazing how much damage a Category 1 storm can do. Sure glad it wasn't a Category 3 or 4! Here's a picture looking out the back door the evening before the storm. The humidity is almost thick enough to cut with a knife. Sure glad for the AC!

Fearless Scarf for Pat

Oops! How could I have forgotten to mention Tracie Barrett's scarf on my blog? Too many other sites where I posted the picture. The pattern is very pretty. I did use Crystal Palace Yarn again but doubled the strands to add softness and drape. Also added the edging to the ends of the scarf. In my opinion the straight ends were not 'girly' enough for the friend I'm gifting. The trim made it just right. I've posted two pictures, one with trim and one without. Both are lovely!!! Sure glad I still had enough yarn available. So I have used all but about a half ounce of the yarn. Not sure what I'll use the little leftover for but it's in my remnant bag for just the right thing. Maybe a trim for a hat? That might work. Anyway, now I'm off to my errands and lunch. Time's awasting.

Hobobird Shawl by Anastaciaknits Using Crystal Palace Yarns Mini Mochi

Good Morning, It is a beautiful day here in Maryland. The humidity is low and the temperature mid-80's. Know it won't last but it is lovely while here. Errands this morning and then back to my crafts. Finished up a shawl (hobobird pattern) I've been working on using Crystal Palace Yarn's mini mochi in color neptune. It turned out quite pretty. The pattern is fun to make and works up in a lovely shape. The thing that makes the pattern so delightful is that you can use any yarn weight and just crochet until the size suits you or you run out of yarn...whichever comes first. After blocking mine, the size is perfect for a petite woman. I have just the one in mind but can't name her yet...it's a surprise! As you can see, Shaunti loves to pose and my talented husband put the shawl in a lovely stained glass frame. All in all, I think it turned out very pretty. Thank you Anastaciaknits for the pattern and to Crystal Palace Yarns for such lovely yarn.

Lapghans for Washington Hospital Center's Sit & Knit Group

Yea! All because of a simple question about a project made a few years ago, I met a lovely new friend at www.ravelry.com and she told me about Washington Hospital Center's Sit and Knit group that meets monthly to crochet and knit shawls, wraps, and throws for cancer patients. I an thrilled to be able to participate in such a worthy cause. It is a lovely way to use up some of my stash yarn, too. I have tons of acrylics which is perfect for these items. I just finished this throw which will give comfort to someone going through treatment. So, I better get back to work and make some more items for the next meeting.

New Baby Papoose and Matching Hat

When I heard that my friend's son was having a new baby I just had to make something special. Every baby deserves his or her own "blankie" to be cuddled in. I had bought this Baby Papoose Pattern at Annie's Attic and had already made two for another friend so I knew that it would be perfect. Of course, I had to do this quickly so it could be sent and received within a week. Good thing I knew that this pattern was easy to do and worked up quickly. I started and finished it in two sittings while watching my favorite TV shows. I hope you agree that the turquoise and navy blues will brighten up any new mother and father even if they are sleep deprived. We all know that babies are demanding little creatures but so worth the trouble. After all, we were all babies once upon a time....

FINALLY...A PROJECT BY ME

Bet everyone thought I had given up crocheting anything but HAP afghans. Not true. In between the putting together of HAP afghans, I have been working on a couple of small projects. Here is the one I just finished, the Infinity Scarf designed by Shannon Mullett-Bowlsby. It is a lovely scarf and while it looks complicated, the pattern is easy to follow and do consistently. I will make another one but will make it longer. For this one I wanted to use up some yarn I had in a cotton acrylic Kiwi...couldn't buy more 'cause it isn't available any longer. I hate it when that happens. Oh well, it turned out just right and will go over my head and drape just inside the opening of a jacket or sweater. Now I'm off to finish another afghan and then work on my cousin's knit shrug. G-r-r-r-r-r-r-r! Knitting is s-o-o-o-o-o slow!

HAP is What's Happening!

You might wonder what is HAP? Well, it is an organization founded and managed by Deborah Starobin Armtrong to provide afghans to wounded soldiers. She has signed up over 1,600 volunteers who crochet or knit 6x9 inch rectangles that are put together by volunteers into afghans. Each afghan is made from 49 rectangles and then crocheted together. So far, over 6,200 afghans have been sent to wounded soldiers at many different military hospitals. Here is a sample of the work beginning with the rectangles, then the designed afghans pinned together into seven columns, and then the finished product. I am just one of many volunteers participating in this marvelous activity. So far I've put together 11 afghans and crocheted about 100 rectangles to be used in other afghans. The designed afghans come in bags of seven stacks numbered 1-7. They are then crocheted together in order of 1st column to 7th column.

Just finished the last test pattern for a bit. This gave me a challenge because I couldn't figure out the edging and had to do it twice before I got it right. It turned out very nice once finished. As you can see, even Shaunti likes it. She plopped herself down right in the middle all by herself and then looked up at me as if to say, 'now what are you gonna do MOM?' I just took her picture. Another Great Anastacia Zittel Design--Hobobird Shawl

I am so embarrassed....I had promised to finish this shawl back in February and here it is April. What can I say??? A senior moment perhaps? I hope it is just over commitment. Seriously, the pattern was a delight to make and it came out beautifully. The yarn was lovely to work with and helped make the shawl look like a butterfly. Needless to say, I'll make more Anastacia Zittel designs and I would love to make more things with the Smooshy Dream In Color yarns. In fact I tried to get more of the color I used for this shawl which was pansy go lightly and found it sold out at most stores. Fortunately for this shawl I only needed the one skein but if I had a second skein I would have used it to make the shawl larger. I am tall and like my shawls and shrugs to wrap around. This shawl will be perfect for a smaller person so it will be a gift...lucky woman!!! Anyway, now you know why I've been out of touch...because I've been catching up on all my commitments. I'm almost there. But what would it be to not have multiple projects going on. Life is just so much fun when you can have your hobby turn out such luscious projects. Keep turning out these pretty designs Anastacia!!!

Half Circle Shawl with Scalloped Border by Anastacia Zittel

This pattern was designed by Anastacia Zittel. It was a nice pattern to make and turned out very nice. I used a K hook with worsted weight #4 acrylic yarn. The shawl as pictured took 16 ounces/451 grams - 781 yards/713 meters. It worked up very fast. I recommend the pattern for anyone starting out in crochet and wanting to make a lovely gift. You can use any weight yarn and crochet until you make the size you want.

Wrap Front Shrug by Shibaguyz is Finished

It was a success. February was a fun month with the Shibaguyz and all their crochet designs. I did complete this beautiful wrap and even got the sleeves inserted properly. I am always sleeve challenged with any item I have ever made beginning with my 8th grade sewing project...the sleeves didn't fit properly so I threw the dress away. Well I put it in a closet and later threw it away. But I digress...I was talking about sleeves not about my patience problem which is legendary!!!! I mention the sleeve issue so no one will blame it on the design...it was purely mine and mine alone. BUT, I did get the sleeves in as the picture shows and the wrap is, well, 'a wrap.'

So, now I have lots of new Shibaguyz projects to choose from. I've made my choice, the Pewter Dress, but first I must make a gift for a friend. A knitted gift, grrrrrrrrrrrrr, but I'll get it done. The finished wrap was made with Lion Brand Microspun Royal Blue yarn.

Cable Rerun Afghan Finished

Well, I finally finished this project. It used 9 skeins of yarn over three separate purchases so the colors don't always match. Not much I can do about it now and I'm hoping that the charity that receives it will appreciate the warmth and not be too critical of the color changes. The textures turned out very nice but don't seem to pop like they did in the magazine picture. Gray isn't exactly a bright color but Shaunti likes it. She likes yarn but usually in its natural state where she can unroll it. Once it is finished she loses interest. Now I can return to my blue wrap and finish it in the next few days. Spring is just around the corner so it is time for bright spring flowers and bright yarn. I'm thinking bright yellow or spring green for the next project. Stay tuned.

Snuggle Bug by Sue Childress

Here is the cute Snuggle Bug designed by Sue Childress. I used Lion Brand Baby's First yarn in Splish Splash and Cotton Ball. It is precious. Now I just need to locate a baby boy to fill it. The rabbit is cute but he has his own warmth. In the meantime I guess I'll work on some other lingering projects and then start one of my 2011 Give It Forward projects. So many projects and so little time. I'm staying busy and enjoying every minute of it. Spring is near!!!

Olivia's Jacket

This is a jacket for a very good friend's 4 year old granddaughter. The pattern was easy to follow and made up quickly with the bulky Baby's First Yarn by Lion Brand. It is soft and washable, a requirement for kids' clothing. My friend and I conspired to pick the correct size and the package is shipping soon to Olivia. It will be a surprise. Here's the jacket completed using one of Lion Brand's free patterns, Baby's First Pink Raglan Jacket. Now I'm back to working on my other projects for a bit. Never without something to crochet.

MARCH IS CROCHET ALONG WITH SHIBAGUYZDESIGNZ

Well we are rapidly moving into the 2nd week of March and the Crochet Along sponsored on RAVELRY by SHIBAGUYZDESIGNZ is moving along. It is such a fun activity. I chose the Wrap Front Shrug for my project. Since I'm trying to use up stash yarn, I chose Lion Brand's Microspun in royal blue. It is working up very nicely. Right now, there are almost 300 of us knitting and crocheting one of their designs. Stay tuned to hear how the crochet along is going. Now, I must get back to my shrug.

What a difference the sun makes with temperatures in the 50's where jackets are not required. That is today. March is coming in like a lion...the windsox are blowing sideways. Can't wait until the trees are green.

I shipped my swap box for Ravelry's Red Heart Winter Swap. I will wait to post the picture until it is received. Don't want to ruin the surprise. In the meantime I started making Baby's First Raglan Jackets by Lion Brand. It is making up very nicely. I decided to make it pink and white since I only have three skeins of each color and the size for a 4 year old requires 4 skeins. I'm using White for accent on this one and will reverse the accent on the second one when I make it.

Correction of picture was made in this version. The difference between the two pictures was bothersome---at least to me. Starting March 1st I'm making the lovely Wrap-Front Shrug by Shannon Mullett-Bowlsby. The yarn I chose is Lion Brand's Microspun.

Brown Hood & Mittens for 2011 Forward Swap

I finished my 2011 Forward Swap for my good friend Victoria. She said she 'absolutely loved the hood and mittens and now she will be warm at the bus stop.' Of course, now we have 70 degree weather so she doesn't need to worry about being warm and soon she will need to be cool but that's a different problem. The pattern for the hood is available from Hood by Cindy Carlson and you can get the pattern for the mittens at Stone Lodge Mittens by designer Lisa Naskrent. Both patterns were easy to follow. I used Alpaca Love by Debbie Stoller yarn for both. It is so soft and works up beautifully.

Once I finished the forward swap, I began to focus on other projects which included fingerless mitts. Once I got to these, I quit looking for other projects. I've been too busy finding patterns for fingerless mittens/gloves. One day I spent over 8 hours prowling the web for patterns. I swear it is almost as much fun to look for patterns as it is to start a new project. If I make one pair of every fingerless glove pattern I downloaded last week, I'll be crocheting (and maybe knitting) until next year at this time. The crochet patterns are beautiful but the knit patterns are even more beautiful and have once again tweaked my desire to learn to knit in the round. So I went out and bought the double pointed needles (DPNs). I already had the patterns all I needed was the knowledge. So I went to my favorite source of knowledge, the Internet, and started to read the pattern in detail and to watch the video on how to use the DPNs only to get totally confused with which of the 4 needles to use. So I looked at the video on using two pair of circular needles (supposedly less confusing) and watched how the yarn is separated between the two needles and how you pull the needles down so you are ready to knit on it again or is it backward or is it forward??? Do you see my confusion???? If not, go look at the video. Maybe you will get it. So, I take a deep breath, recite my calming mantra, and pick up my trusty crochet hook and use the method that I understand and can watch movies while doing. This will work until the next time I see a jazzy picture of a knit item and then it will begin all over again. At least now I have the DPNs and I downloaded the videos. In spite of this frustrating episode with the knit attempt, I managed to finish the second green mitten and matching hat; made two pair of fingerless mitts, and the brown mittens and matching hood. My husband asks me why do I keep trying to knit when crochet is so pretty??? My answer is because knitting is out there and I must master it. He just rolls his eyes and goes back to editing the video from our last vacation on his computer. Of course, I know how to knit with straight and circular needles, it's just those blasted double pointy ones and even the two pair of circular ones that are causing the problem. Maybe I'm just not supposed to make socks or mittens. Whadda you think??? Never mind, don't answer because one of these days I will be posting the success of my knitting adventure but not today. I just remembered the Om shanti mantra and to just breathe. For now, I'm sticking with what I know...crochet.

Green Mittens In Process

My first mittens using Hunter Green by Red Heart Super Saver yarn. I started this pair of mittens before Christmas but only got the right one finished before I had to switch over to my charity projects which had to be shipped before the end of January. Got that done and now I'm making a pair of mittens for a friend and then I'll finish the left one for this pair. These will also go to charity but there is no due date looming over me. I am so excited to have found three charities which allow me to use my huge stash of Red Heart acrylic yarn. In fact one of these charities requires only acrylic yarn to avoid any allergic reactions to the blankets being sent to wounded service men and women. So, I will never be without something to work on for a good cause. Now all I need is more time. It is hard to choose between crocheting, reading, or watching movies. My life is so simple and peaceful. Wish the world could be as easy to manage. I'm sending positive energy to the war zones around the world and hoping for peace.

Fingerless Mittens All The Rage

I finished my second pair and am pleased to report that they came out smaller than the first pair. I tried a different pattern but I think it is the hook size that made the difference. Anyway, I plan to make a few more pair to match the berets that I made a few weeks ago and then donate them all to a homeless charity through http://www.ravelry.com. Seems like the beginning of the new year is a time for cleaning closets and getting ready for new projects. This applies to yarn closets as well as clothes closets. I started this blog three years ago when I retired. My goal then is the same as it is now...EMPTY THE CLOSET... Well, I'm sorry to say it isn't working. I have increased my stash and as of today I have 175 skeins of yarn totaling 36,070 yards of yarn! So, I joined a new group called 'Stash Killers' where we take a pledge to not buy any yarn this year. With all the yarn I inventoried today, I have enough to keep me going for two years unless I give up sleeping and just crochet and knit. Wish all problems were this easy to deal with. Sigh...so many hobbies and so little time. How did I ever have time to work???

Here we are on New Year's Eve. In case you're wondering what has captured her attention, the next picture tells it all. She loves chips! She also loves shrimp but we haven't totally lost our minds over the puppy. We're just partially besotted. She rules the house but hasn't learned how to clean up after herself yet. I'm hopeful! Well, the new year is starting off on the right foot....60 degrees for now but that will change tonight...the temperature is expected to drop into the 30's. I decided that today was the day to upgrade to the 4G network so I installed my Verizon LG VL600 and what a difference...10X faster than 3G is the ad and it seems to be true. Tonight we're having our traditional dinner, prime rib, baked potato, broccoli, and dessert. Yum! Which reminds me I must go start the preparations or we'll be eating at midnight instead of 7 p.m. Hope your new year is off to a marvelous start and just keeps getting better and better. Don't forget the black-eyed peas for good luck--the vegetable not the singers--although the singers are good for you, too.

Most Snow Missed us But .... Not All...Just Enough

We didn't have snow for Christmas Day but we did get a light snow the day after. It always makes everything seem so insulated when the snow is falling...so quiet and peaceful. It was the first snow for our puppy and she wasn't sure what to make of it so she just ran like crazy around and around. Better she runs crazy outside than inside. Today it is windy and very, very cold but tomorrow it is to be sunny and by the 1st we are to have 50 degree weather. We are truly fortunate to live here where the weather often goes around us and drops the heaviest snow on New York and New England. Of course, just often enough to be interesting, it gets us like it did last year. Not ready for that again. Not Yet!

Here's wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas! Just so you know I can cook as well as crochet, here is a picture of a yummy chocolate chip cake I made. The recipe came from a very good friend of mine who had tried to get me to make it for years but I just never got around to it. This was the year that I decided to try my baking skills again and I am pleased to say that lack of use did not diminish them. I thought maybe they had been overtaken by crochet but fortunately not. My loving husband has been helping me finish off the cake by serving us each a warm piece with ice cream every evening. We must eat the cake so we will be ready to enjoy his famous blueberry pie--a family tradition for the holiday meal. So many desserts and so little time. I am always ready for more desserts. Gives me an excuse to sit back and crochet. Here's wishing you the very best holiday season! Remember, desserts eaten between December 23rd and January 2nd have no calories!

A Helping Hand

Everyone needs help at some time, even puppies. Here's a picture of Shaunti as she is recovering from her surgery. She loves to chew on her rawhide bone but the collar prevents her holding the bone with her paws so here's poodlemama to the rescue. Eventually she quits chewing and snoozes. She must wear the collar for 14 days, the 14th day is Christmas Eve. I'm sure we will all be relieved but it doesn't slow her up much...she uses it to scoop leaves and snow and anything else in her way, and that includes yarn.

Hats and More Hats

Here are the hats for my friend's family. Two woodsy hats for the boys and a brown and woodsy one for Dad. A pink beret for Mom and daughter with matching scarves. Now everyone's heads will be warm. It was fun to make these with a goal in mind. They are shipping today for a Tuesday arrival. Have to make a few more hats for the local charity event and then some fingerless gloves for the new swap and then either finish the afghan I've been working on for several months OR start something new. Whew! I looked in my closet and discovered I have lots of yarn to choose from so I'm ready for the next request, whether a baby outfit or a sweater or just about anything. I love to crochet!!!

Favorite Baby Afghan

The afghan is finished, boxed and ready to be shipped. I started booties to match but couldn't make them small enough. The worsted weight yarn is too heavy to make new baby size booties so I dug into my stash and found a perfect pair ready to go. Makes me think that I should get busy between projects and make some booties and hats so I have some ready to go next time. This soft, textured pattern makes the most beautiful blanket. This is the 4th one I have made using this pattern. It uses yarn--1,796 yards with a G hook and single thread worsted weight Red Heart Super Saver in Hushabye. I prefer the worsted weight to baby weight because it makes a larger size blanket and is bulkier. It turned out very nice and will keep the baby nice and warm. I know I was warm under it while working on it. One night my puppy crawled up on it to get under the light so I had to stop work for a bit. What can you do? Puppies are only puppies a short time and I'm enjoying every crazy and cuddly moment. She loves fiber but that's okay cause I wash the item before shipping. Poodles are hypoallergenic but still....a clean blanket is best. Now I'm focused on hats and gloves for another friend. One hat done and a few more to go. Can't send the girls hats without sending the boys hats, too. I mean fair is fair. They'll be ready to ship next week in plenty of time for the first snow. I'm hoping the snow holds off around here until next year...only 3 weeks away. B-r-r-r-r-r!

Hats, Baby Afghans, and Fingerless Gloves--New Projects

Yippee! It is now December and everything is looking better. Our weather is crisp and cold but bright and sunny. It improves everyone's spirits when the sun shines. I am hard at work on some new and meaningful projects. A friend asked for a baby afghan and it is almost finished. Another friend asked for two hats for some special people in her life and one is finished and the other will be ready next week. I plan on making a scarf or some gloves to go with each hat. So, as long as my yarn doesn't run out I'll be crocheting into the future. I'm not worried about using up my stash since I keep buying new yarns and never getting around to using them before I buy more new yarn. Only limitation is my closet and you'd be amazed at what you can get into a closet when you hang it in plastic bags. If I would finally give up on the golf clubs, I'd have twice as much room. Hmmm, now there is an idea for end of year clean-out. We haven't used these clubs in 20 years and I think the chance that we'll ever use them is pretty slim. Just think of the yarn I could store if the two sets of clubs were gone!!! In the meantime, there is plenty of yarn to keep me crocheting for a long time. The golf clubs may still have to go though.

Yesterday was one of those beautiful blue sky, sunny days that makes me want to live in this area forever. Of course, this weather won't last but with sunsets like this, you think it just might. I am still getting over the shingles outbreak but I think I can see the end. Still waiting for that spontaneous recovery....apparently that is what it's called when the doctors have no cure and just wait for it to end while 'making the patient as comfortable as possible.' Oh well I am crocheting and chasing the puppy around the yard or maybe she's chasing me. At least we are both running together in the same direction. Happy Thanksgiving to All.

I'm 6 months old...aren't I cute?

Last month was a lost cause. This month isn't beginning much better. Shingles is something you do not want. It is going on 5 weeks and seems like forever. No new rash but the pain is constant and unrelenting. But, enough complaining. Shaunti's 6 month birthday was November 4th and she is getting better and better. Here she is chewing on her new rawhide bone. She is a constant delight. The backyard is now enclosed so she can run free of the leash and loves being able to run with no one pulling her to 'get back here.' I've started a new baby afghan for a friend of my cousin and it is coming along. It is one of those beautiful textured patterns with a double cluster row separated by a double crochet row. It eats up the yarn so now I am waiting for a yarn delivery. That is all the news worth printing. I'm hoping that this episode of shingles will be a thing of the past very soon. Enjoy your November!

OCTOBER 2010

Well, this month has been a lost month. On October 8th I awoke with severe pain on the right side of my neck. I figured I'd pulled a muscle during yoga and didn't give it much more attention until Sunday, the 10th, when it got worse and I discovered a pink rash behind my right ear. The pain pills were not helping the pain so I called my doctor and was able to get an appointment at 4 p.m. on Monday the 11th. After a cat scan and an exam by a ear, nose, and throat specialist, it was determined that I had shingles. In case you don't know about shingles, let me share with you. It stems from the chicken pox virus so if you have had chicken pox, you can get shingles. It is an inflammation of the nerve endings and can occur on any nerve in the body but usually shows up on chest or back. Mine chose the nerves on the right side of my neck, behind the right ear, and up to the top of my head. The nerve pain was so severe that Percocet didn't knock it. The good news is that it will eventually resolve itself in 2-6 weeks and all the patient (victim) can do is take anti-viral medication to stop the blisters from developing and pain pills to ease the pain. For three weeks I felt like I had the flu and the pain was so bad that I couldn't go to yoga, crochet, or turn on my computer. Shaunti wasn't sure what was wrong but she detected that 'Mom' wasn't her usual chipper self. Today I feel better than yesterday so I think I'm almost back to normal. If you had chicken pox, get the shingles vaccine. I know that I will be getting the vaccine soon since shingles can recur at any time. I do not want to experience this again.

Leaves Fall, Raking is Optional! HAPPY FALL TO ALL!!

I think that is my motto for crocheting...maybe for all things. I was wandering (lurking) around the pages of my favorite yarn site, http://www.ravelry.com and saw a pattern that I absolutely had to have. It was an afghan pattern using lots and lots of textured stitches which would be lovely, be a real stash buster, and help me empty my yarn closet. Well, I saw where it was published several years ago in a favorite crafts magazine so I set about trying to track it down. The first place I tried was on the Internet but nothing could be found. All mentions pointed back to the magazine so I went to their web site to see back editions but none were listed and no pictures were available. All that was provided was a phone number. This seemed very low tech to me but I called anyway. A real person answered and said that they had no copies available but I should call back in a few weeks. No offer to take my name, credit card, or to suggest any other source. I was about to decide that I would just get a different pattern but something in me said to go back to the picture on ravelry and see if I could track it down. I did and was able to get a copy. At the same time I subscribed to the magazine to see if that would gain me access to the archives in case I found another old pattern...I was told there was no archive but that back copies could be ordered by calling this number. Been there, done that. So, I am now working on the pattern and still waiting to receive the first copy of my new subscription. Maybe I am impatient but this little exercise seems to cry for electronic archives where past publications can be purchased electronically. We are all willing to pay for our hobbies aren't we? I know I am.

Afghan From 1993

I was going through some old pictures and found lots of afghan pictures taken before digital cameras. I had to scan this one just to remind myself that I did some very artistic work way back when I first started out. This one was done in November 1993 using Red Heart's Super Saver yarns. The afghan was very soft and if it is anything like the one given to me over 30 years ago, still very usable. You just can't beat acrylic yarn for durability even if you forget and toss it into the dryer. It is like the Everready Bunny and keeps goins, and going, and going. I love all yarn but I do believe that acrylic is my fave!!!

Shawl of Gem Tones Finished

Well even with a new puppy I managed to finish the shawl and it turned out much prettier than I thought when I started out. The yarn stripes nicely and will be even prettier when I block it. It is acrylic yarn but after a good steaming it will drape better. I recommend the Deborah Norville Serenity yarn. It is easy to work with and is washable/dryable. Acrylic is so easy to use. I know, I know, you dyed in the wool folks disagree but you can't deny it is easy to wear. I'm now making a flying diamond shawl using the small bit of this yarn along with a Berocco DK Red. It is turning out to be quite attractive. It will appear here soon as will Shaunti who is asleep under my desk as I type this. At least she has grown too big to sit in my lap as she did earlier. She now weighs 6 lbs, up from the 2-1/2 lbs earlier. She is quite a feisty little puppy. The Vet commented that she is 'very full of herself.' I think this is a nice way of saying she is stubborn. But, she is smart and has learned to 'go' outside and is learning to bump the poochie bells on the door so I can hear her without having to be aware of her sitting at the door looking at me when she needs to 'go.' She looks like a little bear cub right now but next Thursday is her 1st grooming when she should begin to look like her poodle self. We love her!!!

Shaunti is Slowing Down the Crocheting for Now

Well, I haven't been too focused on any new crocheting lately what with the new puppy pulling every thread. I did manage to finish up the 12 inch squares for my swap and to get a few rows in on my shawl between puppy pulls. It's coming along and a picture will appear here in a few weeks. In the meantime the star of the household is Shaunti. She is now 3 months old and growing like a weed. She weighed 4 lbs this morning, up from the 2-1/2 lbs she weighed on July 10th when we brought her home. We are loving her to pieces and she is learning more every day as she develops her little personality. Some of her traits need honing but she is a work in process. Check her out. She will be going to the groomer in a few weeks and she will lose her puppy fur and start to turn silver as the black tips are cut off. We think she's terrific.

The one on the left is her 'ready for dictation' pose and on right she is the kitchen helper. Everything is new and to be investigated. She is the sweetest puppy around.

Red Roundabout Sweater

The red sweater is finished and it looks good. This is the small size so it does not fit me but is meant to show the pattern. Someone will enjoy wearing it. For now, I am just happy that it is finished so I can start a new project. Shaunti loves playing with anything that moves and this includes yarn so it is a challenge to crochet and keep her entertained elsewhere. All too soon these novelties will wear off so I am enjoying her puppy-hood while it lasts. Her little paws make the house a home again and even the inconveniences are enjoyable. Well, maybe not all of them....but she is getting better about letting us know when she needs to go outside. Today I start on a diamond lace shawl using Deborah Norville's serenity yarn. Can't wait to see the finished product. The yarn is a #2 weight and calls for an F hook so it may take longer to complete. Stay tuned.

Shaunti's 1st Yarn Project

Here is my new helper and I use that term loosely. I am making squares because anything requiring concentration would be impossible. Right now she likes to pull on the yarn and chew on it. She has needle sharp teeth and is not very gentle. You can see how small she really is since the square is 12 inches and she is much smaller. She will grow like a weed so we are enjoying her tiny self and taking lots of pictures. You can already see her silver undercoat. She will be silver as her fur grows and she gets trimmed. She had her first vet visit yesterday and wrapped them all around her little paw....they were very happy for us to have a new little one. Life is good! Lots of yarn for me, lots of yard for my husband to work in, and a new puppy. What else could we want? Oh I'm sure we could think of something but we're very happy with what we have. Shaunti is a pip!!!

SHAUNTI IS HERE!!!

We took Shaunti outside for the first time on Sunday and just happened to be near Lexe's remembrance stone. When my husband was editing this picture of Shaunti, he said she had such a quizzical look on her face it was as though she was seeing something so he inserted the photo of Lexe as a ghost image and entitled it 'Welcome Shaunti.' We thought it made a nice transition from one loved poodle to the new one taking her place. Shaunti is such a delight. She weighs 2-1/2 pounds and is not quite as big as my tennis shoe. She is 9 weeks old and has already turned our house into a nursery. Right now she is sitting on my lap sound asleep but knowing that she is loved beyond imagination. The game now is to take her outside so she can do her 'toilette' before she decides to use the rug. So far she has been very good about going outside. We must remember she is only 9 weeks old and all of this is new to her. We picked her up Saturday afternoon after 6 hours driving through pouring rain. It was to have been almost 4 hours but that was without the rain or the 4 accidents along the way. But, it was all worth it. When we saw the little fur bundle we forgot all about the drive. She is perfect. This last picture is entitled 'Wow, it's big world out here but I know I'm safe.' You can expect to hear lots more about Shaunti. She will become my model of my yarn products and will grow up to be silver just like Lexe.

Sweets for the Sweet

Well, we are back from our vacation. I just couldn't resist fixing something good for dessert. It's not tiramisu but there is something else isn't there? Hmmm. There is. Yes, I've been crocheting since I got home and I did miss not having my yarn project with me but I would have been too tired after walking all over looking at Italian ruins to crochet anyway so....it was a nice break. But, I'm back now and am about to order some new Deborah Norville Serenity Garden yarn. It makes it's own pattern and it is a #2 Weight which is what I need for a sweater pattern that has been staring me in the face every time I walk down the hall. It is pretty yarn and should make a beautiful short sweater to go with jeans this winter. Or maybe next winter...depends on how diligently I get to working on it. Better I work on the sweater and quit making pies I can tell you that though or I'll have to make a bigger size. Coconut is hard to resist! So, come on over and have some pie and bring your yarn.

Burgandy Sweater Finished

As you can see from the pictures, the sweater turned out quite nice. I added the collar from a pattern I had used for another sweater to give the sweater some style. The unfinished neckline called for in the pattern looked unfinished to me. Anyway, the sweater is longer and loosely fitting so it can easily be worn as a light jacket with jeans or leggings. I seem to have trouble with my gauge even though I do measure as I go so maybe I need to use a smaller hook to get tighter stitches. My crochet skill is still a work in progress. Guess that means that I'll always have something to work on as I start, frog, and start again. All of my yarns are used at least twice by the time the product is finished due to my gauge challenges. Oh well, it keeps me occupied and that is what crochet is all about. I simply love the feel of the yarn in my hands and seeing it turn into something wearable....even if the something turns out to be larger than expected. Now I'm working on a new item so stay tuned for my next challenge. A red sweater of some kind. Why red??? I don't even like red but the yarn was on sale and it is a nice DK weight. I'm moving away from my afghan weight yarn.

Burgandy Sweater and White Azalea Plant

Spring is here. The azaleas are in bloom. I love the flowering plants. See the pretty picture and notice the unicorn flag. This year we plan to cut back the plant but it is sooooooooooooooooooooo pretty I worry that by cutting it, we might ruin it. Guess we'll find out.

I'm back to crocheting after a couple of fiascoes with yarn that didn't fit the pattern requirements and I had to rip them out. I have lots of the green yarn available but have to decide what to make with it. I may just go back to an afghan which was what it was originally purchased for way back when all I made were afghans. Trees are in Bloom--It is Beautiful

Today is a glorious day! The picture with the wind socks shows the trees just a few weeks ago but now the trees have their new bright green leaves on and the weeping cherry in our front yard is in beautiful bloom. She is 3 years old and is growing like a.....well, like a cherry tree. Her name is Laura, in honor of my husband's mother. Even the plants devoured by the deer over the winter are back in bloom except for the camellia which didn't recover. I hadn't gotten too attached to it anyway....just last year we planted it so it was not well established. The hosta in the front pots are growing so fast that you can almost see the shoots grow. The yard is looking good and today the temperature is to soar to 90 degrees. Whew! Then tomorrow it plummets to 60 and rain. That's spring for you. April showers bring May flowers. I'm counting on it.

Lexe's 11th Birthday Flowers

This is the last posting about Lexe. I promise. Future poodle mention will be for a new puppy when she arrives which will be sometime in July....we hope that is the time. I just wanted to take today since it would have been Lexe's 11th birthday to show her beautiful picture one more time along with the flowers I bought in her honor. The groomer said that purple was her color. Today is a beautiful day and a perfect time to move on. Tomorrow is the first day of April, one of the prettiest months of the year so Namaste Lexe! March Like A Lion

Today is cloudy but there is the promise that tomorrow will be sunny and warm and that the warmth will last through the weekend. We are skeptical but optimistic. We even put out the new bird feeders and revived the spinners. The cowbird on the ground was sitting on the ladder earlier, patiently waiting for us to get out of the way. Guess it was a young bird and had no fear of humans yet. We moved away and you can see from the picture the bird returned. It has been a changeable month with warm one weekend and cool another. We continue to search for a puppy while missing Lexe like crazy but life must go on. I have found several local breeders expecting litters in early May so one of those little pups may have our name on her. We'll just have to wait and see if a little Shaunti is one of them. Saw lots of cute puppies but are waiting for a little female silver miniature.....she will show up.

COWL NECK SWEATER TAKES SHAPE

Here is a picture of the sweater before sewing the 2nd side together and finishing. The slit in the middle of the multi-colored yarn is a sleeve opening. When the two green edges are sewn together, a slit of 23 stitches will be left open to form the other sleeve opening. Then the yarn is attached to one end of each slit and the sleeve is crocheted in the round. Then the sweater will be finished. It is almost tunic length. The plastic markers mark the cowl neck. It is a very easy pattern to make. I would recommend using an I hook instead of the J hook called for in the pattern. Of course, check your gauge before starting on the pattern. This will use up all of the stash I had in my closet so I am reducing the old yarns but do continue to add new yarns. At this rate I won't ever empty the closet which was my goal. Now I'm just trying to keep the yarn to a size that will fit in the closet. So far so good. With the spring weather coming, it is harder to not order new yearn. The spring yarns are so-o-o-o-o-o pretty and light. Oh well, there are much worse things to be addicted to than yarn. No one has ever been busted for too much yarn.

Kiwi Green Triple Cross Stitch Shawl

As you can see this pattern came out very nicely even though I used a cotton/acrylic TLC yarn and the pattern called for a lace weight. I made the shawl the same size as the pattern but reduced the number of rows across to accommodate the heavier yarn. It is quite nice and the ruffled edging is lovely. I'm sure this will be worn over summer dresses and with light weight slacks. It would be the perfect beach coverup over a swimsuit even since it is cotton and acrylic and would be easy to dry. I'll make this again.

NEW BEGINNINGS--SPRING RENEWAL

Hugs and kisses to Lexe....if only in my dreams and memories. She is now dancing around the moon. Notice how much brighter it has become now that she is there. Today is sunny and bright and I feel better. I know there will still be moments of sadness but they will get fewer and fewer and then we will remember Lexe with laughter and fondness instead of tears and pain. My crochet project pictures will not be as sweet without her furry image but one of these days in the near future we will have another poodle to sit with me as I crochet and to light up our lives. We think she will be Lexe Deux!

In the meantime, we are relieved that the snow has melted and that there are no new storms in the forecast. February was truly the month from hell so I am glad we turned the page and started a new month. The Jamaica vacation was one highlight of the month of February and the wearing of 'bling' given me my good friend in Las Vegas. She said that one should never be without their bling, not even on the beach. So.....here is my bling.

STORM HAS ENDED--LEXE IS AT PEACE

Lexe would be 11 years old on March 31st and we were hoping that she would be here to celebrate it. But, alas, that was not to be. We spent the last two weeks with Lexe giving her the medicine prescribed by her veterinarian, giving her lots of love and attention, and, just doting on her. She was happy and alert and, of course, we hoped that the diagnosis was a mistake but we knew deep down that we were living on borrowed time. That time ran out in the early hours of this morning and we had to make the decision that it was time to let her go. We took her to the hospital and now she is in doggie heaven or wherever good dogs go when they die. We are sad but we will work through our grief and consider finding another poodle in the not too distant future. We figure that Lexe's persona is so big and so merged with us and our house that another poodle would be the only fitting critter. Here is a picture of Lexe painted by the sister of a dear friend. It hangs on the wall of my study directly above my monitor so I can get my Lexe 'fix' any time I need it. I know we did the responsible thing but it still hurts. Time to distract myself with some new yarn project.

STORM CLOUDS GATHER

Well, it has been a while since I was here. Lots of things have happened and not the least of which was the snow storm of the year! We were on vacation in Jamaica at the time and I know you are saying 'Awwwwwwwwwwwww, that's too bad.' Yes, we had to extend an extra 3 days due to airport closures, plane cancellations, etc. Fortunately, we were able to extend at the place we were staying so we didn't have to pack and move. Then we had to get home to a neighborhood which had just been dug out. Our house is in an area with one road in/out so if it doesn't get plowed no one can get out and no one can get in. We were lucky to be out and not trying to get in....at least not right away. After several days the plows arrived and got rid of most of the snow from storm #1 but then snow #2 hit and that took a few more days to clear. By the time we arrived home the area was plowed right down to the pavement and except for our driveway everything was clear. We were able to clear the driveway with the help of a neighbor and his bobcat. I wish that was the end of the storm but alas it was only the beginning. The worst storm for us was yet to come. On Monday the 15th we went to pick up our precious poodle, Lexe, to find her in distress. She was so weak she could barely stand and the woman who had been caring for her was as surprised as we because she had been fine right up until that morning. So, instead of taking her home we took her to the Vet where they ran some tests, x-rays, and ultrasound and determined that she has a mass in her spleen which in almost every case is malignant. This was a very bad diagnosis and will ultimately end her life. The Vet said she might have a few days or a few weeks but that ultimately it will be fatal. So, we brought her home and are pampering her to pieces. I wrapped an ace bandage around her middle to compress her belly and spleen area to protect it and to keep it from rupturing. I've made her a purple healing blanket to dissolve the mass and do meditation mantras to focus the healing properties of the universe on her. So far she is doing just fine and continues to amaze us with her alertness and energy. She is getting scrambled eggs and sausage in the morning and being very spoiled. I'm hoping a miracle will occur.

A Cheery Hat & Scarf for 2010

Well, the new year is upon us! This cheery hat and scarf should make the cold weather more bearable. I knitted the scarf just to see if I could remember how and to see if knitting seems as slow as I remember. Yes to both! I think I will stick with crocheting. I got to thinking about knitting because I'm reading Maggie Sefton's latest book about her Lambspun yarn shop and all the knitters who are constantly popping in carrying their tote bag with their ongoing projects. I mean really.....who has time to carry around their project. Obviously, they are working on soft sweaters and not king size afghans but that's just my harumph. The stories are sweet and I do enjoy them so thought I'd give knitting a try. Guess it's just not my thing or else I'm just not coordinated to handle two needles. It doesn't make me sane and crocheting does, although my husband might take exception to the sane bit. Just kidding! All is well in my end of the world. How 'bout yours? P.S. The characters in the book are taking a class on crocheting so they are branching out.

Happy New Year Everyone! This was a flash from my past. 1958 to be exact. When you quit laughing and can read again, that was the style both for hair and dress. It is now almost 7 p.m. here and dark and rainy. I hope it doesn't interfere with the fireworks at midnight. I love watching the colors fill my TV. Every year we talk about going to watch the fireworks over the inner harbor and every year we say, 'Why? It's cold out there.....' So we stay home, toast the new year in front of a cozy fire and congratulate ourselves on being so smart. I think it's just being old but I'll take smart. As long as the yarn doesn't run out and I can still pick up a crochet hook and occasional knitting needles, I'll be happy. There isn't any chance of that happening. I used up several skeins of yarn last week and then had to buy an additional skein of lavender to finish a shawl which means I'll have to make another one to use up the remaining lavender and so it goes. Anyway, life is good! Here's hoping that you had a great 2009 and that 2010 is even better. I am the hopeless optimist so I always expect tomorrow to be even better than today. So be happy, and remember, a person is just about as happy as he/she wants to be. I think Will Rogers said that and he was a very smart guy!

SNOW, SNOW, SNOW! Wow, they got it right this time. Thank goodness it didn’t do this last week when we were trying to get home from the airport. That would have been a real mess. But Old Man Winter gave us a break and didn't let loose until Friday night, December 18th, just before midnight and it snowed continuously all day Saturday. The prediction was 16-24 inches and where I live we officially got 19 inches but when we measured our front drive area it only measured 14inches so guess it depended on where you lived. Anyway, it was almost a white out as you can see behind the flag and Santa. which was taken on Saturday afternoon. Thank goodness I filled all the bird feeders Friday before the storm hit. My husband went to the grocery on Friday, along with hundreds of others, and spent over an hour just waiting in line to check out. Fortunately, the ice cream didn't melt. We had an excuse since we had been out of town but why the others were there is a snow warning phenomenon....happens every time there is a prediction. Today it was sunny and pretty but still cold so not much melting went on. The plow did get to our street this morning so that made it possible to get out....not that we had anywhere we needed to go. So, we just stayed in and counted our blessings. I wish everyone a wonderful holiday season, whatever your affiliation may be. Enjoy the peace and quiet that occurs at this time of year and above all, be safe!

Shawls for the Holidays

Well, once I get started I go to town. I made all five of these shawls in about a week and used up lots of stash. All the Lion Glitterspun, all the Paton's Brilliant Gold, a Caron Soft Bone, one 4 oz skein of Red Heart Painted Desert, a skein of Red Heart Eco in mushroom, and 2 skeins of Red Heart White. Just to let you know that I mix and match as appropriate. They are lovely and I am keeping the middle one for me. It is brownish with gold glitter and the painted desert gives it a southwest appearance. Very pretty. The others I will donate to a convalescent center near me. I'm sure the ladies will feel special when wrapped in something lacy and warm. It is the Lion Brand Doily Shawl pattern and is a delight to make. You can use any yarn weight and any hook size. The size and weight will determine the length and width of the shawl. Since I like larger yarns, I used a P hook and doubled the strands. The beauty of the pattern is that you can mix the strands as you go and it still comes out lovely as demonstrated in the brown/painted desert one. Blue Shawl in Breezy Pattern

Well, heres the shawl I made for me using up the birthday yarn. I used the Breezy Shawl pattern and it came out beautifully. I added an edging of shell stitches (3 double crochets, chain one, 3 double crochets) then back across the same shells with single crochets in each double crochet and a picot in the center chain one stitch. It made a nice swingy edge. So now I'm working on another shawl to use up the gold glitter from the gold shawl described in the last post. It is a double yarn with a baby soft white added. Will be thicker and warmer but not heavy.....I hope.

Gold Glitter Shawl

Well, finally the shawl is finished. It took 10 skeins but it is light weight and soft so can be easily packed into a zip lock bag or stuffed in a corner. It can be handwashed and dries flat but I don't see it getting very dirty very often so that should be no problem. The question is what to do with it? I'm not much of a shawl wearer but it was easy to make and will go with any outfit since the gold glitter is neutral. It even looks good with jeans! Now what to do with the remaining 8 skeins of yarn? Maybe a lacy wrap of some kind. We'll see. For now I think I'll just put the yarn in my closet and wait until an idea hits me. Time to go work another project. It's always something. Good thing I have crocheting as a hobby because this weather is gloomy and gray but crocheting lets me be cozy inside and enjoy making something warm and cuddly. Life is Good!

HATS IN A BAG--THE END

OK-OK! I promise this is the end of the hat saga but I just had to put them all in a bag to carry didn't I. It just happens to be the bag my new boots were carried in and that is perfect. Hats and Boots! Get it??? Of course you do. Anyway, I made a total of 16 hats, 2 scarves, and 1 shawl and used up lots of my stash yarn. I'm so happy. Now I'm on to other challenges like two shawls which are partly finished and then I'm tackling another sweater but this one has the sleeves crocheted as part of the back and front so no inset sleeves. Yea!!! If I could crochet boots I would but I'd much rather get leather boots to go with my outfits. This is definitely the year for boots. So let's hear it ya'll, 'These boots are made for walkin' and that's what they're gonna do...one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you....' Can you hear it yet? Nancy Sinatra, circa 1970s. Anyway, I can hear it.

Well, the new blog editor sure uploads the pictures nicely. These all fit across center of page. As you can see I'm still using up yarn to make the hats and a 3rd scarf for the ladies. I sure hope they like camouflage. It seems appropriate with the troops overseas protecting us but not everyone appreciates the pattern. These hats are fast and easy to make so everyone benefits--I get to use up yarn and the wearer gets to keep her head warm. Today is overcast, windy, and rainy and is a good day to continue my projects and to update my computer files. Hmmmmm. Maybe I'll even reconstruct my genealogy file that has been lost in the shuffle. I have all of the information but just haven't had the patience to enter it. I got the most recent My Family Tree software so have no excuses. Wish me luck!

Shrug is Finished

Finally finished the shrug. I had sleeve problems...yet again! But it fits perfectly now and is very light and easy to wear. My friend, Victoria, gave me the yarn for my birthday so I was determined to make it into something pretty. The hat on the other hand is now in the bag for the shelter and I will have to work on another head cover for Mimi the Mannequin. Her name is Mimi. A friend suggested the name and since she represents me it seemed appropriate. She is a bit wobbly but that is kinda like me, too. Ha-Ha! I'm still considering replacing this plastic inflatable variety with a hard plastic variety but haven't started shopping yet. For now, we'll have to wobble a bit.

Well, two more hats for the cause. These are of camouflage yarn so may be more appropriate for a child but the one with the green band is quite large and would fit a big head. There used to be a store in Annapolis called 'Hats in Your Belfry' and that would be appropriate for today's blog. I've been making hats out of every imaginable yarn I could find. I used up all the Artist Print and managed to eke out 7 berets. Then I started in with Ranch and Lipstick and managed to make 5 more plus the trim on the shawl. Then, I found a smidge of Frosty (very pale green) so trimmed one of the Artist Print hats and made a short neck warmer. I'd say I've done everything possible to use up my stash BUT STILL IT PERSISTS!!! Although, now it is the old, old yarn along with the new and all fits in the closet and none is on couch so I am making progress. Note to self: Must stay away from yarn sales. Just one more collection of beiges to go and then I can work with some older but coordinated colors. Sigh! That will be nice. So today's pictures show all the hats along with the new as yet unnamed mannequin. A friend has tried some names out but they don't hit me. Besides she (the mannequin) may be not long for my world. She is too wobbly and I'm toying -- get that -- with getting a plastic one that is sturdier. We'll see. For now, it just sits in the corner wearing a rejected hat and a shawl made to use up yarn for color. If I don't stress her, she is fine but she can't model heavy items like sweaters. Mannequin Addition to Tools

Well, after serving as the living model for all these past photos all these years, I decided to get a mannequin to display my crochet items. After spending most of a day searching the web for an inexpensive one (most were over $100 and I thought that was too much for a 'toy' to hold yarn), I found an inflatable site with lots of choices for less than $50. I purchased a torso shape, including the head and arms so that I could show off sweaters and hats.... see the picture. She is a bit wobbly since she is full of air (ha) so I may have to buy a solid one with a face that won't reflect the flash from the camera. We'll see. Let's not lose track of the reason for the purchase which was to better show off my crochet items, not to show off the mannequin's face. But, as you know, these cutsy things have a life of their own so don't be surprised if you don't see a much more sophisticated model here sooner than later. I remember a movie that took place in a department store where the mannequin came to life and became real.... at least at night in the dark of the department store. But, I digress! This inflatable model works well for hats but doesn't hold up very well with a sweater. Even the shawl in the picture caused her distress (to wobble) which is why I figure I may have to move up to a solid variety but that's a ways off. For now, this one will do. What to name her??? Hmmm. Maybe Missy Aarie in keeping with her lighter than air personality. It's always something isn't it?

On Being a Poodle Mama

I have been playing step-mom to my neighbor's Maltese-Poodle mix while she has been on vacation. What a treat! He is so tiny that he could walk under my own poodle if she would stand for it. Not! She isn't too sure about this interloper in her yard with her humans but he loves the attention and doesn't seem to mind her attitude. He is white as you can see from the picture and now that he has been groomed he is very playful. I think before his grooming, his fur was so matted and he was just too uncomfortable to move much. We decided that we would take him for the grooming since his last cut was with a pair of scissors and looked 'rough' to put it mildly. Now he is precious. Even the groomer said that his personality changed after the bath and cut. He wags his tail and sits up for the treats that I bought for him. He is one lucky dog! Alas, today his human returns home so he will not have the benefit of all the attention that we have been lavishing on him. Still, he has a bed inside and food and water so he is safe. Not everyone can be as much of a 'mom' as me.

Using Up Artist Print Yarn

I'm on a roll now. Made a poncho and two hats with my Red Heart Artist Print and still have 8 skeins left. Holy Cow! What was I thinking when I bought it. Oh yes, I remember now. It was in two bags in the closet and I thought I was totally out so ordered 6 more skeins and then found the other bag. Oh well, it makes pretty lapghans and ponchos and hats. And it looks good when used as an accent with blues and clarets. But today I am featuring the poncho and hat for a friend's 5 year old daughter. The single hat is for my friend in Las Vegas who needs a hat, albeit very rarely, to walk her dog. Now I just have to figure out what to do with the remaining yarn. Oh well, something will come up. Today is very fall-like with overcast sky and cool day but I'm ready. After all, I have lots of yarn to use up. Never a dull moment as long as there is a hook or knitting needle nearby.

Hats & Scarves for Little Ones

Well, I finished my little project and the items are ready to be sent to the little ones. They love red so this will match their coats as well as their blankies. Fun to make cause they go so fast. Now I'm finishing my charm school shrug and ready to begin the elegant winter sweater using my cotton yarn. Not sure whether it will be a robe or what. Just that it will be kiwi in color. Fall is here and so I am enthusiastic to get started on some new projects. Have to finish my books first so it may be a while. But, I am busier than ever and none of it has anything whatsoever to do with work! Isn't that great. Enjoy your fall and start a new project no matter what it may be.

Spice Ruffled Shawl

Well, I'm back. Can't believe it has been over a month since I posted here. Guess that shows that there is life beyond crochet. I have been obsessively reading The Outlander series of books by Diana Gabaldon. I am now on #6 and have to wait for #7 to come out in October. They are vurrrrrrry good books. Take place in Scotland in 1700's and then in Colonial America in the 1700's. I recommend them. My friend, Victoria, told me about them years ago but I was too busy to be bothered but did get around to them last month and have done nothing but read and crochet on this shawl. Now I can go back to finish the #6 and see what happens. I'm even planning a vacation to Scotland next spring. Me, compulsive? Naugh! Here's the shawl. It is lovely and worked up just like the others. Now I'm off to read and work on my sweater for me. Fall begins tomorrow evening so I must be ready.

Beginnings of Charm School Shrug

It is a start. I like the yarn and the pattern so now I just need to have time to work on it. We have a new 'pet' which is occupying a lot of time. Actually, it is a new HP Desktop with lots of bells and whistles so we have been trying to make it work and act like the old computer. Alas, this one has Vista and the old one had XP and the two are not the same. So ..... we are buying some new 64 bit software and trying to get older 32 bit stuff to work. Some does and some just crashes the machine. I'm the technogeek so I am the one fixing and messing with the machine. I loooooooooooove it! But it is interfering with my crocheting. But now we are up and running so I can sit and not run ..... but work on my crochet projects. Here is the current one. Pretty color (a gift from my crochet buddy) but pattern and my gauge check calls for a G hook. So, it isn't going very fast! But wait, I'm supposed to be relaxing. No deadline. That's what retirement is about. Right? After almost 2 years you'd think I'd remember. Not yet! Well, time to go crochet. Stay tuned for the final picture.

Beach Coverup

This project came together very quickly and turned out nicely. It is a Free Crochet Pattern from Lion Brand, Pattern Number 70258A. Since I am still trying to clean out my yarn closet, I chose a Red Heart recycled acrylic yarn of a #4 weight. The pattern called for a #5 weight so I had to adjust the size to match the yarn and hook size but it all came together as you can see from the photos. I used a J hook and made the large size just in case the gauge was not correct. When I used the J hook with this yarn, it came out to the correct gauge but sometimes that is misleading. Anyway, to be sure it would be large enough, I made the large size and as you can see it fits. That's me trying it on. Now I'm off to a new project using some lovely yarn I received as a birthday present. The color is my favorite color so my friend knew what she was doing. The little shrug will be perfect for the cooler days which are on the way. Hopefully, we'll stay warm a bit longer. I'm having a wonderful summer doing whatever it is I want to do. Retirement is a wonderful thing. Too bad I waited so long. But wait, I didn't want to retire until I did. Work hard and play hard! That is my motto. I'm into play mode!

Finished City Chic Sweater

Well, it is finished and it turned out even better than I expected. The purpose was to use up some yarn that had been hanging around for several years. I used up all but one 5 oz skein of Ranch Red but I'll find something to use it with. In the meantime I'll just throw it in a bag with some other large remnants. Maybe they'll get together and make something. Ha! So, the sweater fit me perfectly. The pattern was exactly correct with my gauge using a J hook and worsted weight yarn. The instructions suggested a K hook and bulky #5 yarn but mine worked beautifully. Since I was using a lighter yarn and smaller hook I made one size larger than the measurements for me and it came out just right. Anyway, I am a firm believer now (finally after many frogged sweater sleeves) that you MUST DO A GAUGE PIECE. It has been a real time saver. That's funny since I'm supposed to be relaxing not trying to save time. Oh well, you know what I mean. It is frustrating to have to frog an item even if it has kept me occupied for days (or weeks). This pattern was in a Moda Dea pattern by Ann E. Smith. I am now making the Scalloped Edge Cardi by Melissa Leapman from the same booklet. This time I amusing up some yarn that I received as a gift. This one is truly for me. The others can be for others if I could only find some 'others' who would like them. Gotta go! My husband just trapped squirrel #6 in his continuing efforts to relocate our huge squirrel population. More about this later.

Hat and Scarf with Flowers

And, here is the hat with flowers and matching scarf. It is made with Lion Brand Wool Ease and the remnants of the Canadian wool that I used for the salsa afghan. Now I am rid of those bits of yarn. Wish I could just throw it away but somehow I just can't. At least this skinny scarf is still wearable if a little shorter than most. I can't use either piece since wool makes me itch. I have to wear gloves to crochet the item. It does work up beautifully though. So now I'm on to using up my cotton and recycled yarns. Then just maybe I'll get back to using up some closet stash. Oh well, it will be there when I get to it. No one else is using it.

Breezy Shawl Complete

I think the shawl turned out very nice. I did notice that the yarn is part wool so when it is washed, it must be laid flat to dry or it will shrink up in a dryer. Oh well, that will be the problem of the recipient. Guess I'll have to include washing instructions. Usually I put a yarn wrapper in with some extra yarn just in case. I am working on the lipstick/ranch red sweater that I started a few weeks ago. It is coming along nicely. And, I finished up some bits of yarn by making a hat/scarf which will appear in the next post. Both turned out quite nicely but are for no one special. Guess they'll go along to the assisted living facility. Maybe one of the folks can give it as a gift to their grandkid. Other than crocheting, I'm enjoying the spectacular weather we have been having. It is like September with mid 80 degree temperatures and very little humidity. Makes me want to get out in the hammock! Back to the yarns.....

A Shawl & A Sweater

I have two new projects underway at least for now. The shawl is very pretty and will be quite light to wear I'm sure. The sweater is heavier and will be ready for winter unless I decide to frog it. Not sure I like the open stitch pattern since anything you wear under it will show through so the wearer will be limited to solid colors but that may be okay. We'll see. If I finish it, it will show up here. If not, well I'll let you know. All is peaceful in my house. The 4th came and went with no rain. That is an amazing feat given the weather patterns recently. My yarn closet is not getting smaller but it isn't getting any bigger either. I reduced my stash by 9 skeins last week but then added 13 more for a ruffled shawl I have been asked to make. Not sure that counts as an increase though since it will arrive and depart quickly. I've about given up on reducing it and just try to contain it. A friend of mine said she found another large bin of yarn....so she has passed me by and I've been accumulating yarn for many years. She only started 3 years ago. Fortunately, there is no prize for using up all of one's yarn. THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN I'M SURE! Must go work on my projects.

Butterfly Shawl

This turned out to be quite a nice pattern. I printed it from www.angelfire.com and it is truly a lovely piece. Since I was using up yarn it didn't come out as large as the pattern intended but it allowed me to use up three different yarns without the shawl looking too mis-matched so that made me happy. I love it when I can reduce my stash. Not sure who will receive this but I'm leaning toward the ladies at the nearby convalescent center where my other handiwork has been distributed. I'm guessing that a handmade item will pep someone up when they aren't feeling their best. So now I'm off to use up some more of my stash. The older yarn remains but I am using up the new at a terrific rate. Too bad I don't have 8 arms so I can work on 4 items at a time. Today it is raining so that gives me added incentive to just curl up on the couch, watch a movie, and crochet. Of course, I'm always ready to crochet!

6th Photo in 6th Folder in My Pictures

Well, you can't say that I don't do what I am asked. However, there is only one photo in the 6th folder and it is of my favorite model, my poodle. Lexe is her name and she is the best. You can see in this photo where she models her T-shirt...she is very vain. Must take after her poodlemama! Anyway, she is nine years old and has the run of the house. She rules the house. She appears in many of my yarn project photos and is best wearing the baby outfit which I have also included here. This picture came about as a result of spreading the items out on a round red tablecloth which Lexe immediately lay down on. So, I put the christening gown on her and took this picture. I took this request to mean the 'My Pictures' folder on my hard drive and not the picture folders archived to my external drive where I have photo folders beginning in the 1950's. Those might have been more interesting but this is the one current. Now I have done my duty. too bad, but I don't have any bloggers to send this to except for the one that sent it to me. 'Tag, you're it Under Victoria's Hat.' Also, Happy 50th Birthday!

A Sweater That Fits

Well, this pattern came out very nicely sized. I made the large version and will make it again but will use the small instructions. It is a lovely pattern and easy to make as long as you know about raglan sleeves and how to hook the front and back of the sleeve together with the 6 chains called for. It took me a minute to figure it out but then I wondered why. It's always easy when you know how isn't it? I'm reinvigorated now as I always am when I start a new project. Then midway through I wonder why it's taking so long but I always finish what I start even if it means that it gets frogged in the end. Hmmm. Maybe I should size up the item during the making so I don't wait til the end to find out that it doesn't fit. Whatever! I doubt if I'll change at this late date. Life is for experimenting so that's what I'm doing.

Another MASSIVE Sweater--Removed 2nd Photo

What am I doing to cause these large projects??? Well, maybe the yarn doesn't fit the pattern. But, it did. Or, maybe the hook was too large. But it wasn't. I used a smaller than called for hook. Whatever it was, I'm sure getting lots of practice at frogging. I have ripped this one out and have 7 balls of yarn plus 4 skeins untouched of the additional yarn I ordered to finish the edges. If only I had tried it on....the story of my creative life. I hate to measure and to try on. I am a hopeless optimist in that I believe that the pattern as written is correct and will fit. Alas, that is not always the case as I have seen in this green sweater. Besides the color is not the best for me either. Oh well, it's a moot point now since I'm not making a sweater out of the yarn--at least not this sweater. And, the pattern cost $6.99! Holy Cow! It looked so nice on the website and it was quick to download. I'm sure I'll make something out of it but it will be a less flexible yarn than this TLC Cotton. It's beautiful yarn but just not for such a loose pattern. My friend says she only uses single crochet with the yarn and this was not only a double crochet but in back loop only making it even looser. Live and learn. I'll be back with another one later that I've almost finished. Much tighter stitches and more fitted style. Never give up is my motto.

My Ruffled Sweater

Well, I finished the ruffled sweater after several attempts to use the beautiful Berocco yarn. When I decided to add the ruffle I had to order some additional yarn and fortunately Jimmy Bean's Wool in Reno still had a supply so it is done and I love it. I wore it yesterday and received several compliments. It is quite soft and the ruffle really makes it. At least, I think so. I'm going to add a frog to keep it closed at the point of the 'V' in the neckline. It was worth the wait. And, I love the pattern which is a waffle-style....It is a double crochet, chain 1 across and it makes a wonderful textured finish.

My Roundabout

Well, I decided to keep this one for me. After all the yarn cost over $80 and that is a bit spendy to charge someone, especially when some of the yarn has been used twice already. Ha! That's because the first item I frogged and then the 2nd item that I started I stopped. So, 3rd time is supposed to be charm. This is lovely yarn but I just couldn't find anything I liked and then when I made the bone roundabout I thought it would look good in the multi-colored Berroco Comfort Sock and it does! I'm almost finished so will be replacing this partial picture with a complete item soon. I still have new yarn to use and have done very little to reduce the size of my stash. Going on 2 years now and still.....but I'm enjoying myself. Retirement is terrific. I recommend it!

Bone Is For Everyone-Picture Correction

Well, I finished the sweater for my cousin and it came out very nicely. I added the edging from a sweater pattern that I made earlier which is crocheted to the sweater itself rather than sewn on as in this pattern. I just didn't think a sewn-on edging would be as permanent as one that was actually crocheted on. The patterns are very similar. I plan to make a second sweater using Lion Brand Microspun but that will be another story. It is still raining here.....has been for most of a week.....which does not make for happy campers. Not that we are camping out but you know what I mean. Anyway, the flowers will be glorious whenever they get to bloom. Rainbows are in the future.

Critters in House--Oh My!

Well, there we were sitting in our dining room having dinner when we heard the loudest scratching and bumping ever.....and it was coming from the wall! So, we looked and listened but it didn't seem to bother the critter. We didn't find any thing but it prompted Murray to go out and look for a point of entry. Well, he found one between the foundation and the siding so he took the necessary action ..... it was not the easiest place to access as the picture shows but it had to be done. When he first tried to get under the area he couldn't quite fit so he had to dig out the area first and then while he was out of sight I took his picture (unbeknownst to him)! Anyway, he covered the hole and still that night we heard the scratching and thumping. It sounded like a large critter. Since we couldn't locate it, we just hoped that it would lose interest and go away. But, that was not to be. Several days later while he was working in his study he caught sight of something out of the corner of his eye outside the window at roof level. Sure enough, there was a critter. It was a very large raccoon staring back at him but pawing below to try to find the 2x4x92 inch board which had been leaning there earlier that day. Yep, Murray had moved it out of the way just in case and so we think the critter was already in the house and now had to find another way out and down.
As of that day which was Sunday night we have not heard any more scratching so we're hoping that's the end of it. Never a dull moment when you live in the rural burbs! Wouldn't have it any other way though. It didn't distract me from crocheting though.

Roundabout Sweater

Well I have a new project. A light weight sweater for spring and summer to keep arms warm in the office when the air conditioner is working too well. We all know that feeling. I found a pattern and decided to use Caron Simply Soft in bone to make it compatible with any item worn with it. So far so good. The pattern is the same stitch as in the Moderne Jacket that was such a problem but it seems easier to keep straight when using a single strand and a smaller hook. time will tell. Today is beautiful with sunny skies and no wind. After 3 days of rain the sun is a nice change. Of course, in a few weeks I'll be complaining that it's too hot. Oh well, enjoy today!

April Springtime

Spring has arrived. As you can see from the picture, I finished the Moderne Jacket from Lion Brand Yarn on ravelry's crochet along. It came out quite nice. Now I need to find buttons since I don't like the self-yarn buttons the pattern calls for. The Goldfinches are thriving on my thistle feeder. And the tree trimmers were here yesterday to cut down some dead trees and to groom others. We will have a sunny backyard. The better for the weeds to grow. We shall see. While crocheting and frogging about every other row I watched Mamma Mia! the movie and lots of Pierce Brosnan movies and TV series Remington Steele. I fell in love with him in his role in Mamma Mia! I know he got the 'golden raspberry' for a lousy supporting actor but he was smoochable and that is why he was picked. Everyone knew he couldn't sing but .........oh boy he sure did look good trying to sing to Meryl Streep. I am obsessed with that movie!!! I even put down my hook to focus on the movie. I have now seen it at least 12 times and watch it daily when I walk on my treadmill. It's what gets me walking. But this is a yarn blog so ...... I did order some new yarn to make a wrap/throw so that will be next. Enjoy the upcoming good weather!

To Felt Or Not To Felt

Well, I finished the wool afghan and then felted it. I think I prefer the unfelted version. It looks brighter and clearer in the picture. The colors are vibrant and the ruffle adds to the salsa flavor but I think felting must be done on solid stitches to be effective. The open weave of the V-stitch in this pattern did not felt like the ruffle. All in all I think I'll stick to my acrylic or cotton yarns. Wool makes me itch plus it is very hard on my hands. I wore white gloves the whole time I was working on this project. It took 12 balls, hanks, or skeins....total of 48 ounces of yarn. So my stash has been depleted a bit.

A Break from Crochet to Dine Out

Oh My! I had forgotten how much fun dining in Old Towne Alexandria could be. It used to be our favorite location for brunches and lunches but since we've moved to Bowie, about 25 miles away, we never go back. Well yesterday we made a nostalgia visit to one of our old restaurants, Il Porto, on King St. right in the heart of Old Towne. It was fun and the food was still delicious. The building has been there since before the Civil War, built by an old sea captain, with very sturdy wood and brick. It's reassuring to know that somethings can last almost forever. It was delightful. Now I must finish my afghan to get on with my new sweater project. Next post will have the afghan before and after felting. Enjoy springtime wherever you are!

Aqua Shawl using Lion Brand Suede

Well, I used up some stash yarn finally! Yea! And it came out beautifully. A friend of mine just had surgery so I thought she deserved something soft and squishy to cuddle up with. I know she wouldn't want wool (she's allergic) but I remember I had this suede yarn with no use in mind. It is so soft and cuddly and washable, too. It just called out to me to be made for my friend. I used the Lion Brand Half Moon Shawl pattern and it came out beautifully. Of course, I added extra rows to make the shawl more robust and voila...she has a 76 inch long point-to-point by 34 inches wide shawl to wrap up in while she recovers. It's always more fun to make something with someone in mind.

Spring is Here

Well, as you can see from the photo, we got a last gasp of winter this past Monday. We woke to 8 inches of snow--the most in several years. It was beautiful but even Lexe is ready for spring. Cute as she looks in her sheepskin coat, she is ready to run free. And, today is lovely with 70 degrees and a real feel of spring. Soon the flowers will be in bloom and the snow a distant memory. And, we can get back to working on the deck and installing the spa. I am not out of yarn....not even close to being out. When I get the hammock out of the yarn closet it will look empty but the yarn remains just about the same as a year ago. Why is that? It's much faster to buy new yarn than to use up existing yarn. I've been working on a wool afghan using the Canadian yarn a friend gave me and it is slow going....my nose itches constantly since I am allergic to wool but I'm half finished with the 1st one. Yes, there's enuf yarn for two. I'm thinking of felting them just to see how that looks. A friend of mine who makes hats has experimented with felting but from a hat to an afghan is a leap. I'm expecting 40% shrinkage which means I must make the original almost twice as long and twice as wide as I want it to be when felted. Hmmmm. Maybe that will use all the yarn in one afghan. Stay tuned for the completed project. In the meantime, must get busy on a half moon shawl for a friend of mine. I'm using Lion Brand Suede in Aqua and it will be beautiful. Later.....

SPRING IS AROUND THE CORNER

I sure hope spring is on the way. Today the cold wind is blowing and the sunny sky is misleading. But, I am back from my travels to Mexico with a bit of a tan and ready for warm weather. Didn't even pick up my hook on the trip. Took my trusty recycled yarn and pattern just in case I wanted to start my wrap but didn't do it and haven't started it yet. I did finish the sweater that I had to remake---the sleeves were too long and too big around---so that is done as you can see. It came out very nice and I'm pleased. I think the flowers make it even better so guess I'll make another using the same pattern.

Also finished my dog's sweater--she models so nicely but doesn't really enjoy it. She is almost 10 years old. Yikes! That's almost 70 in human years. Can't believe she has been part of our family that long. Hate to think of her getting old...but it happens to all of us. As they say 'you can't get out of this life alive' but we can try! So now I'm working on another sweater pattern using my stash of Homespun in candy apple red. I am making inroads into my stash but ever so slowly. For now I'm focused on a treadmill with a motor. I have the old fashioned kind that Jane Fonda touted back in the 1980's which was manual...you walked on it to make it cycle. Well, that is much too much exercise and mine has been resting in the family room as a rack for yarn bags. Every now and then I move the bags and try to use it but alas, it is just too hard to walk on the darn thing so I am getting an electric one very soon. That will be the focus of another blog entry with the old one and then the new one. So that's all for me for now. All is well in my world. I'm off to watch a movie and work on my red sweater.

Winter Doldrums

I'm knitting away on my lap throw using the moss stitch. So far so good. (I added a picture) I still prefer crochet though so I'm also making a scarf out of the yarn remaining after making the cover up. It is so soft and my mind can watch TV and movies while I crochet much easier than it can when I knit. That's probably because of all the crocheting I've done but.....I don't see me knitting that much in the future. But NEVER say NEVER! Today is gray and cloudy and I'm ready for a vacation. Right now, Lexe (my poodle) is curled up in her soft bed under my desk and I'm trying to find computer sites which explain how to speed up the startup process. I think 5 minutes to boot to the desktop is excessive but I'm afraid to delete any files until I know that they are not essential. I'm telling you computers are not for the faint of heart. So far I've spent hours trying to speed it up....one could argue that it would take hundreds of slow boots to equal the number of hours I've spent working on it but....it's the challenge of the hunt I guess. Wish me well!

New Year and New Work

Hard to believe that it is now January 11, 2009! A new year has begun and I have made some new resolutions but am renewing my old activities with yarn. The scarf is for my cousin. I call it my harlequin scarf. It is quite long and used up 2 of my recent remaining skeins before they got added to my stash. So, while I'm not making much progress in using up my stash of older yarn I am not creating new stash. I started this blog to empty my yarn closet but so far all I have done is rearrange the yarn in it. It is fuller than ever because I had to store my hammock somewhere and then needed somewhere to put my exercise ball's empty box so when I decide to put it away, I'll have a box for it. The ball is rolling around in the living room where I might be able to find it and actually use it. Then again, maybe not. My intentions are always better than my actions. But one thing that I do faithfully is work with yarn. I made a sweater only to find that the sleeves were way too big around and too long. I seem to be sleeve challenged when it comes to sweaters. This is the 3rd one that I have made where I had to take it apart and remake the sleeves. The first one I gave away to someone with long arms; the 2nd one I gave to my friend, Victoria, who said she would fix it for her sister; this one I have taken apart and ripped the sleeves down to the beginning but haven't yet started the remake. Reminds me of the 8th grade in sewing class when the pattern didn't fit and instead of fixing it, I just threw it away and made another item. Usually it didn't get thrown away but only stored in my closet for a period of time until I could throw it away. Kind of like left overs in the frig--you save them for a week or two with good intentions and then you toss them. That's my way with lots of things that either don't fit anymore or never fit but look good, shoes that are uncomfortable but look terrific, clothes that are new but you wonder why you bought them, etc., etc., etc. You get the idea. Now I am getting ready for a trip to Mexico for vacation. You might ask 'vacation from what' since I am retired now and have a very relaxed life with no obligations to speak of....but everyone needs a change of scenery. The coverup in my last blog entry was made for this vacation. I hope I get to wear it. So.....that's all for now.
